Written in the pre-Civil War era when Shakerism was at its numerical peak yet increasingly conscious of a decline in spiritual energy, the journal details a mission of representatives, two men and four women, of the Central Church of New Lebanon, New York to Shaker communities in Enfield, Connecticut, Shirley and Harvard, Massachusetts, New Gloucester (Sabbathday Lake) and Alfred, Maine, and Canterbury, New Hampshire.
